FAQs:
What is SMS?
A Safety Management System is the set of procedures and processes which management uses to manage the Safety, Health, Environmental and Security activities needed to support the business. The SMS establishes the roles and responsibilities of management and personnel with respect to SHE&S activities, establishes a framework of key elements and expectations of those elements to assure an effective outcome from SHE&S Activities, and defines a process for evaluation and continuous improvement of the SHE&S activities with managment review and endorsement. In the US the ANSI Z-10 standard applies and will become the standard in addition to the OSHA safety management guidelines with implementation of I2P2 (Injury and Illness Prevention Programs) as a requirement with OSHA. Internationally OHSAS 18001 is the parallel set of systems on a world wide basis along with ISO 14000 for Environmental and ISO 31000 for Risk Assessment processes.
